Anyone who commutes to and from work in Missouri understands how hectic traffic can be at times, especially if there is a reckless driver sharing the roadway. A tragedy occurred just before 8 a.m. on a recent Friday. The incident left a community mourning the loss of one of its student teachers.

Police say a vehicle breeched a double yellow line

A 21-year-old woman who worked as a student teacher in the area was traveling southbound when trouble arose on the highway. A driver headed in the opposite direction reportedly tried to skirt around a Federal Express truck on the road by veering over the double yellow line. The maneuver landed the passing vehicle heading in a wrong-way direction in the young woman’s lane.

Investigators say the woman tried to avoid a collision

In their preliminary investigation, police determined that the woman tried to swerve to escape the vehicle that was in the wrong lane and heading straight for her. A collision then occurred between the woman’s vehicle and the Federal Express truck. The driver who appears to have caused the collision did not remain at the scene.

The crash had a tragic outcome

The Fed Ex driver suffered no physical injuries in the collision. Sadly, however, the student teacher did not survive the impact of the crash. Similar collisions have occurred in Missouri where a driver is deemed responsible for a collision that was preventable were it not for his or her reckless driving behavior. When another person suffers fatal injuries in a collision caused by driver negligence, an immediate family member may seek restitution on the decedent’s behalf by filing a wrongful death claim in a civil court.
